Affogato

In Italian, “affogato” means “drowned” or “drowned in coffee“…. and refers to an Italian espresso-based beverage (or dessert) in which hot espresso is poured over a scoop of ice cream or gelato.

In it’s simplest form, you would just pair a shot of espresso with a scoop of vanilla ice cream to make an Affogato.  But there are many unique flavor combinations you could try if you are in the mood for something a little bit different… vary the flavor of the ice cream or gelato (vanilla, chocolate, and hazelnut are good options) or add a half shot of sweet liqueur to your espresso to make a more “grown up” version (try Amaretto, Frangelico, Kahlua, or Bailey’s).  Any way you go, this is an awesome dessert that is beautiful (presentation-wise) as well as simple and extremely easy to make.

Affogato:

  • 1 scoop vanilla ice cream
  • 1 hot (2 T.) hot espresso
*Variation:  Add 1 T. Amaretto or other sweet liqueur (Frangelico, Kahlua, Bailey’s, etc.) to the espresso.

1.  Prepare one shot (about 2 T.) of hot espresso.  (Or just use very strong brewed coffee.)

2.  Place 1 scoop of vanilla ice cream into a cappuccino cup.

3.  Pour the hot espresso over the ice cream and serve immediately!
